Zombie Apocalypse Now - an Interdisciplinary Humanities/Biology Project

This project is currently under construction and is planned for the Fall of 2016 for 11th grade at High Tech High International.

Brief Working Description:

The historical, and the resurgent, interest in Zombies - from early poetry and stories to more recent graphic novels, to video games, and movies - highlight the cultural anxieties of a society. Further, zombie narratives illustrate, in some fashion, how we have dealt with, and continue to deal with, these anxieties as a society. During this semester-long project, we will use the Zombie narrative, Zombie culture and the overarching idea of the Zombie Apocalypse to understand cultural shifts and anxieties, historical and contemporary, around political, social and scientific issues in our world. We will study zombie narratives as a literary development and will consider the Zombie Apocalypse as an avenue for learning about historical situations and current world issues where individuals have been, or could be, facing actual “apocalyptic” living situations.

We will utilize literature, historic documents, primary sources and critical essays and take look closely at how zombies and the idea of a zombie apocalypse has infiltrated our cultures.

Students will write academic and creative pieces of writing.
